Why Japan’s Autumn Foliage Is So Beautiful

Autumn has arrived, and the season of colorful leaves is here. Across Japan, the leaves turn beautiful shades of red, yellow, and orange, blending gently with the green of evergreen trees. This colorful scenery makes even a simple walk feel special.

Japan has about 26 kinds of deciduous broadleaf trees. Maple and ginkgo trees are the most common, but there are many others too. The colors are never exactly the same each year, as they change with the weather, humidity, and other natural factors. Every autumn shows its own kind of beauty.

Another lovely feature of Japan’s autumn leaves is how naturally they blend with traditional temples and shrines. The red leaves beside old wooden buildings look almost like a painting. You can also find beautiful views of autumn colors reflected in lakes and rivers, or spreading across parks and mountains. These peaceful scenes bring a quiet sense of comfort.

The best time to see the autumn leaves depends on the region and the year’s weather, but it’s usually from late October to early December. In Japan, there is a tradition called momijigari (autumn leaf viewing). Dating back to the Heian period, it is a cherished cultural practice where people enjoy the sight of deciduous trees turning brilliant shades of red and gold in autumn. To admire the beautiful foliage, people visit parks and popular leaf-viewing spots. It’s not just about looking. Searching for beautiful fallen leaves is part of the fun too.

If you’re planning to enjoy Japan’s autumn season, here are some of the recommend places to experience the beauty of colorful foliage.
